Championship leader to start from pole after dramatic Shootout

Repco Supercars Championship leader Brodie Kostecki (No. 99 Coca-Cola Chevrolet Camaro) has taken a vital pole position for this afternoon’s race at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

With a fast lap of 1:11.0118 in Sunday’s Armor All Top Ten Shootout, Perth-born and Gold Coast resident Kostecki scored his ninth pole of the 2023 season, the most of all drivers.

It was a disastrous Shootout for Kostecki’s nearest championship rival, Shane van Gisbergen (No. 97 Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet Camaro), who was hit with a kerb strike in the Shootout, deleting his lap. After trimming the championship deficit to 104 points in Saturday’s race, van Gisbergen will have his work cut out for him today as he starts from ninth.

Kostecki’s teammate Will Brown (No. 9 Coca-Cola Chevrolet Camaro) crashed into the Turn 3 tyre barrier on his lap, but was able to complete his Shootout lap and therefore will start eighth.

25-year old Kostecki will be joined on the front row by David Reynolds (No. 26 Penrite Ford Mustang), who finished third in yesterday’s race. Reynolds’ teammate and rapid Kiwi Matt Payne (No. 19 Penrite Ford Mustang) will start third after starring in qualifying yesterday to start second.

Former teammates and past Gold Coast race winners Chaz Mostert (No. 25 Mobil 1 Optus Ford Mustang) and Mark Winterbottom (No. 18 DeWalt Chevrolet Camaro) will start fourth and fifth.

Yesterday’s pole sitter and race winner Cam Waters (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang) will start seventh after running off track during his Shootout, which took place in warming conditions in Surfers Paradise.

The final race of the weekend at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 begins at 2:15 p.m. AEST, where the 25-car field will contest an 85-lap, 250-kilometre battle around the streets of Surfers Paradise.
