Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY Champion, Simon Evans will join 22 other drivers participating in the first rookie test for the GEN3 race car on Monday (24 April), following Rounds 7 and 8 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship at the Tempelhof Airport circuit in Berlin. Evans will return to the iconic Tempelhof Circuit, where he was crowned Champion of the 2020 Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY race series, three years after an epic ‘lockdown showdown’ finale.
“I’m incredibly excited to be taking part in the official rookie test for Jaguar TCS Racing,” says Evans. “The Jaguar family has always meant a lot to me, and I’m really looking forward to this opportunity. It’s the first time I will have been back to Berlin since I won the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY at the Tempelhof circuit.
“It’s definitely going to bring back some great memories. I know the track very well but it’s been a long time since I’ve driven a single-seater. I’m going to enjoy myself, while hopefully getting some valuable data for the team.”
A number of rookie test drivers have competed in the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand (now known as the Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Series). Will Stevens will test with DS Penske. The Brit finished ninth overall in the 2008/09 Toyota Racing Series with Giles Motorsport including five podiums and one pole position. He eventually made it into Formula One competing with both Caterham and Manor Marussia F1 teams (2014-15).
Daniil Kvyat also drove in F1 with Toro Rosso and Red Bull (2014-20) and competed in the 2011 TRS season finishing fifth overall with Victory Motorsport. This included six podiums, one race win and one pole position. He will test with NIO333 Racing FE Team.
Jordan King finished fifth overall in the 2012 TRS season with M2 Competition with one pole, one win and four podiums. He will test with MAHINDRA RACING.
Jehan Daruvala finished runner up in the 2016 Toyota Racing Series to now McLaren F1 (and ex TRS) driver Lando Norris. His three race wins included the Lady Wigram Trophy race. He returned to NZ for the 2017 TRS season, this time finishing fifth and winning the Lady Wigram Trophy for a second time as well as the 2017 New Zealnd Grand Prix. He will also test with MAHINDRA RACING.
Robert Shwartzman will test with DS PENSKE. He competed in and won the 2018 Toyota Racing Series with M2 Competition. This included finishing all fifteen races in the top-five, the only driver in the season to do so, and winning the Denny Hulme Memorial Trophy.
Since the last rookie test in 2020, several drivers have made the step up to a full- time race seat. Nick Cassidy (Envision Racing), teammates Sacha Fenestraz and Norman Nato (Nissan Formula E Team), Jake Hughes (NEOM McLaren Formula E Team) and Sérgio Sette Câmara (NIO 333 Racing) all participated in the last rookie test held in Marrakesh.
Building upon the Berlin test, in Rome just under three months later, a 30-minute Free Practice session will be held prior to Round 13 and 14 of the Rome Hankook E- Prix (Saturday 15 July and Sunday 16 July), for competitors aged 18 and over who have never previously raced in Formula E. All teams are obliged to run at least one driver in this session.
