The South Island Formula 1600 Championship has been renamed as the South Island Formula Ford Championship after a decision by the South Island Formula Ford Club.  The return of ‘Ford’ will be welcomed by many as it represents the essence of this unique global single-seater category.

Over a decade ago, the Club made the decision to drop the ‘Ford’ name and substitute it with ‘1600’, the capacity of the categories’ Kent engine, due to the continuing absence of the Ford Motor Company’s involvement in the formula and the unwarranted promotion of the brand.

With the return of Ford sponsorship in the last three years, this appears to have initiated a change and now the adoption of what many see as mandatory, the original name of the formula.

Dates for the coming summer South Island series calendar are yet to be finalised and will include the usual 18-races.  It’s likely that there will be one less meeting meaning five rounds in total with three hosting four races and the other two just three races each.
