Huge field for both One-Hour South Island Endurance races on Saturday

The popularity of the One-Hour Carter’s Tyre Service South Island Endurance Series keeps increasing with large grids assembling for both Class 2 & 3, and Class 4 & 5 races this Saturday at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park in Christchurch. With both last year’s overall victors, Ryan Wood and Dennis Chapman, not on the grid, the door is open for two new winners to emerge from some stiff competition.

Even though two-thirds of the Class 2 & 3 (GT and >3500cc categories) grid are Porsche teams, we may well see them battle recently crowned 2022 North Island Endurance Series One-Hour champion, Sam Collins in the Marc II Mustang.  Leading the Porsche charge is Marco Schelp with co-driver Anthony Leighs (Porsche 997 Cup S).  Schelp is a previous One-Hour champion and finished second to Wood last season.  Martin Dippie, who won the title in 2020, is back in his Porsche 991 Cup and will be a contender with the other 991s of Ronan Murphy (main photo), Ben Byers and Garry/Ben Derrick and International Motorsport team’s riding talent Luke Manson.

Add in two stunning Manthey Racing Porsche 991 Cup cars for Francois Beziac and Heremana Melmezac and the scene is set for some tough competition over 60 minutes of racing.

Also on the grid will be Bruce Davidson (Chev Corvette C6R) who will be looking to repeat his last season’s form in winning Class 3 (>3500cc).

Scott O’Donnell (Hyundai i20N TCR) narrowly missed out on the overall Class 4 & 5 title last season and will be looking to add the trophy to his cabinet this year.  His biggest threat could well come from James Penrose (Audi RS3 LMS TCR), Mike Hall (VW Golf GTi TCR) and Grant Askew/Cole Askew (VW GTi TCR) as well as Steven Kelly in a very quick BMW E46 M34TR, all competing in Class 4 (2001-3500cc).

Last season the Class 5 (0-2000cc) title was a battle between Honda Civic drivers with Tim Dossett coming out on top.  Dossett is not on the grid this Saturday and now there is a strong contingent of Toyota 86 cars in the category, ready to take on nine Honda, a BMW, Mazda, Lotus and Suzuki.

Qualifying takes place at 9:00am (Class 4 & 5) and 9:25am (Class 2 & 3) with the Class 4 & 5 race starting at 10:20am and the Class 2 & 3 race at 11:40am.
