Top Historic Touring Cars on show at ITM Auckland SuperSprint

A full field of unique Historic Touring Cars will take to the Pukekohe Park Raceway this weekend as one of the support categories to the Repco Supercars round, the ITM Auckland SuperSprint.

Greg Murphy, John Bowe, Paul Radisich and Steven Richards will be part of the 30+ strong field that includes 13 Group A cars (including four Ford Sierra RS500s), four NZ Schedule S cars and 13 Supertourers.

Whittakers RS500 Sierra – Greg Murphy

New to the category is the ex Whittakers Peanut slab Ford Sierra RS 500, owned by Christchurch’s Peter Sturgeon, which will be piloted at the meeting by ex-Bathurst winner Greg Murphy.    This was the first touring car that Greg drove 30 years ago at the very start of his professional career. He went on to share the car with Kayne Scott in the 1992 Nissan-Mobil Series first in Wellington then a week later at Pukekohe, finishing third in the series.

The car previously had raced at Bathurst in 1988 driven by Armin Hahne and Robbie Francevic, in 1989 with Francevic and Gianfranco Brancatelli and in 1990 with Brancatelli and Robb Gravett

John Bowe will be reunited with his Dick Johnson #6 Shell Sierra RS500 that he raced in 1991 (main picture).  Bowe was with Dick Johnson racing between 1988 to 2009.

Back in New Zealand is F5000 and Historic F1 driver Michael Lyons from the UK.  Last weekend Lyons co-drove a Hyundai i20N TCR with Southland’s Scott O’Donnell, winning the One Hour South Island Endurance Series race in Christchurch for Lass 4 & 5 cars. Lyons will be driving a 1998 Nissen Primera Supertourer. This car was built by Team Dynamics and was raced by Matt Neal in the 1998 British touring car championship

1993 Group A Larry Perkins built VP Holden Commodore

Austin McKinly will be driving his newly acquired genuine 1993 Group A Larry Perkins built VP Holden Commodore which was campaigned in the Australian Touring Car Championship.

This weekend Lyons will be behind the wheel of a 1998 Nissen Primera Supertourer. This car was built by Team Dynamics and was raced by Matt Neal in the 1998 British Touring Car Championship.

Steven RIchards will race Murray Sinclair’s Nissen Primera Supertourer, the same model he drove for Garry Rogers Motorsport in the 1997 Australian Super Touring Championship.

1995 Mondeo Supertourer of Conrad TImms

Former World Touring Car Champion, Paul Radisich, will pilot the 1995 Wolf Ford Mondeo at Pukekohe while Stu Rogers will be competing in his very quick twin-turbo RB26-powered, 4WD BNR32 Nissan Skyline GT-R.

Qualifying takes place Friday afternoon at 15:50 with Race 1 at 10:35 Saturday morning and Race 2 at 13:00 in the afternoon. One final race is set to go at 11:40 Sunday morning.
