Lawson to test Super Formula car this week

Now an ex-F2 driver, Kiwi Liam Lawson will this week test a Super Formula car in Japan while an official announcement on his involvement in the 2023 series is expected to take place early next week.

The official post-season Super Formula Test will take place at Suzuka, in Japan, on Wednesday and Thursday with Lawson getting his first taste of the Dallara SF19.

Lawson will drive both days for the Honda-powered and current championship winning Team Mugen. Their reigning champion Tomoki Nojiri will skip the test.

Twenty-four drivers, including six rookies, are scheduled to take part over the two days of testing.

The Super Formula single seater series is considered the closest race car in performance to the current Formula One car.  The one-make, Dallara chassis, series uses both Honda and Toyota engines.  Only 13 non-Japanese drivers have won the championship with fellow Kiwi Nick Cassidy (see main photo) the last one to do so in 2019.

Liam will return to New Zealand for his ‘summer break’ in mid-December.
