Seventeen year old Liam MacDonald of Invercargill has taken his third Southland Sports Car Club Championship in succession. He received the SSCC Club Champion’s Trophy among his other awards at the clubs 2014/2015 prizegiving at Teretonga Park recently.
From being the club’s youngest ever Club Champion two years ago he has now added two more titles in quick succession. MacDonald was consistent in the many disciplines of the Club Championship again this season, winning the Noel McIntyre Trophy for the club’s Race Championship, the Erskine Flying Farewell Trophy, the Auto Centre 2501cc & over Race Class Trophy while also finishing runner-up in the club’s Motorkhana and Clubsport Championship’s. On a national level Liam also took podiums at the only two rounds of the NZV8 Touring Car Championship he contested this season.
In a familiar twist, Cameron Morison of Invercargill finished runner-up behind MacDonald for the third year running. Morison retained the three trophies he won last season, the SSCC Speed Trophy for the Sprint Championship, the Warren Robbie Memorial Trophy for the Clubsport Championship and the Keith McFadzien Trophy for winning the Motorkhana Championship.
In the other racing classes Todd Blackmun of Invercargill won the Turntru Machining Trophy for winning the 0-1300cc class while Warren Kett of Invercargill took the Arrow International 1601-2500cc class for the third year in a row.
Nicky Maw of Invercargill was the recipient of the Howard Kingsford-Smith Trophy for the Most Improved Driver of the 2014/2015 season and Todd Blackmun won the Arrow International Trophy for the top Novice Driver of the Year. Rachael Beck of Invercargill won the SSCC Club Championship Ladies Trophy for the fourth year in a row while Joseph Oliver of Invercargill won the Ladies Committee Trophy for the Junior Driver of the Year.
The Macks Panel & Paint Trophy for the Marshall Of The Year in 2015 was awarded to David Strathern, a member of the First Response Team.
The Keith Douglas Memorial Trophy for Distinguished Service went to Paul Rosel, a former competitor, Past President of the club from 2002-2006, former Treasurer and also a long serving race committee member bringing valuable experience, knowledge and insight to the role.
Outstanding Achievement Awards were made to club members, Steve Heffernan, Brendon Leitch, Damon Leitch and Jamie Conroy in the wake of a stellar season of success for club members. Heffernan won the Class 2 New Zealand Formula Ford title for 2014/2015 (the third time he has achieved this), Brendon Leitch won the Spirit of A Nation Trophy Race at Teretonga in January against an international Toyota Racing Series field and also finished second overall for the round, Damon Leitch won the Bruce McLaren Trophy for the top New Zealand driver in the 2015 Toyota Racing Series while Conroy won also won a Toyota Racing Series race at Teretonga against an all star field in just his second weekend in the series.
The 2015/2016 motor race season at Teretonga begins with a two day race meeting over the weekend of 19/20 September.
