Fogg heads big Highlands muscle car field

Angus Fogg will begin his 37th year of racing in the South Island and is aiming to be at the front of an earth shaking 25 car Central Muscle Cars field at Highlands Motorsport Park over the weekend of January 18/19.

The big Central Muscle Car field includes a healthy and thundering mix of some of the iconic machines from the sixties and seventies including Dean Perkins’ Ford Falcon, Dean Hansen in his Holden HQ and Andy Knight in his rebuilt Oldsmobile Starfire.

Fogg heads the entry for the fourth round of the 2019-2020 Championship in his fire-breathing J A Russell-backed 1970 Ford Mustang, which is already a firm fan favourite in its spectacular black and gold livery.

Fresh from a successful 2019 season that saw him dominate at Bathurst in the Touring Car Masters with the 800 horsepower car, Angus is relishing the prospect of unleashing the car’s potential around the Highlands track.

“It’s a challenging and rewarding circuit in any car and it’s definitely going to be an eye opener in the Mustang,” he said.

Fogg has plenty of experience at the track. He won the very first Toyota 86 Championship race there, and has raced a Ford Falcon XE, a V12 Jaguar and a Mini around at the picturesque circuit too.

“I’ve done a few laps around there in the seasons since the circuit opened and it still brings a smile to my face. The Mustang is going to be pretty spectacular around there as are a lot of the CMC cars. Lots of the boys have raced their cars round there before too. As ever I’ll have my right foot firmly planted and will be giving it maximum attack.”

The New Zealand series remains one of the best supported motorsport categories in the country by both fans and drivers and is widely regarded as one of the best muscle car fields in the world in terms of car preparation and performance.

The cars in New Zealand run in two classes – Group 1 and Group 2 – and will put on four races over the weekend for Highlands race fans, with qualifying and two races on Saturday and two races on Sunday.
