Two Hour enduro success sees format added to national finale

Organisers NIERDC and promoter Speed Works have today confirmed the addition of a Two Hour race at the forthcoming National Endurance Championship finale at Hampton Downs.

It means club level competitors will have the rare opportunity to compete on the spectacular and challenging 3.8km International circuit.

The addition of the Two Hour format race to the endurance finals at the North Waikato track follows the huge growth and interest in the race format in its first season as part of the NIES weekends. Twenty five plus cars took the start at the final round at the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park.

Cars competing are eligible based on lap times at the North Island circuits. For Hampton Downs that means a car must not be able to lap under 1 minute 47 seconds on the international track.

Every entrant who took part in one of the Two Hour races during the 2021 Golden Homes North Island Endurance Series is eligible and there will be a limited number of wildcard entries available. Geoff Short the Speed Works’ promoter says there was a strong message coming through from the growing number of competitors during the season that they’d love to see a Two Hour final.

“We were all very impressed with the growth in such a short space of time of the Two Hour format and it became a key part of the NIES weekends almost immediately,” he explained.

“Throughout the season competitors were asking about a final and an overall championship decider and we are delighted to be able to give them that. It’s all down to them of course. They have come out in droves during the season and we expect the numbers for this one-off final to be massive again, particularly as it’s on the international circuit.”

NIERDC’s David Dovey agreed. “Being a driver series NIERDC is always looking for new and interesting race opportunities and this is definitely one to do! If you are in the time bracket, get your skates on and enter!”
