Can Murph be top dog in Hampton Downs’ Clash of the Titans?

Kiwi Motorsport legend Greg Murphy heads the entry as action-packed motorsport returns to Hampton Downs Motorsport Park.

The event on December 17-19 will be the first major sports event Aucklanders have been able to attend for four months since the Delta outbreak began and there are ten million reasons for fans of fast cars to make a weekend of it!

The race meeting will be the first major domestic motorsport event under the new traffic light system and the first major event following the removal of border restrictions on December 15th.

It will operate under strict Covid Protection Framework guidelines in what is an orange level zone and that means spectators will be permitted to attend and vaccine passports will be mandatory for entry.

Four-time Bathurst 1000 champ Murph – who has been unable to compete at Bathurst this year due to Covid restrictions and the lack of MIQ availability –  will race the one and only Renault RS01 in New Zealand. It’ll be the first time the 600 horsepower fire-breathing monster has raced. It will compete an open GT category created for the event on both Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th.

There’s no question Murph will be a force to be reckoned with around the challenging twists and turns of Hampton Downs but he’s going to have to work hard to add another win to the history books.  He’ll be lining up on a grid of exotic race cars worth more than $10 million and will be up against some of the country’s fastest GT3 machinery including another unique speed machine – the 700 horsepower V8 Brabham BT62.

“The Brabham will be making its New Zealand circuit debut in the hands of Dwayne Carter and the noise alone should be worth the trip south of Auckland,” said promoter Geoff Short. “Throw in a few more new-to-NZ exotics from McLaren, Porsche and Lamborghini and the stage is all set for an epic weekend of high octane action and jaw-dropping speed. Most importantly it’s going to be run safely for any fan who wants to come and enjoy the show.”

To keep the action rolling from dawn until dusk there are grids of cars from GTRNZ, BMW, Honda and Mazda lined up to get their summer seasons underway with qualifying and racing on Saturday and racing all day Sunday.
