Great finish to Clubsport season at Teretonga Park

The 2021/2022 Southland Sports Car Club ClubSport season wrapped up on Sunday with the Evolution Motorsport ClubSport Triathlon at Teretonga Park in Invercargill.

The event consisted of a single car Standing ¼ Mile, a Grass Motorkhana and an Autocross event.

The event drew a wide variety of vehicles including a Ford GT40, an electric LVVTA, and a Mercedes convertible.

Duncan Cairncross of Gore won the Standing ¼ in the electric LVVTA with Liam MacDonald (Ford Escort) second and Julie Allan third in a Chev Camaro.

The Grass Motorkhana was won by Zac Murch in his Mazda AZ3, his first ClubSport victory, with Craig Allan in a Honda Accord second and newcomer Nate MacKay in a Volkswagen Golf third.

The day ended with the Sprint, won by MacDonald, now in his Nissan Pulsar, from Steve Watson (Toyota Starlet) and Barry Sommerville in another Pulsar.

Twelve-year-old Nicho Scoles of Invercargill impressed on debut in his father’s BMW 118, achieving a best result of 16th out of 24 competitors in the Grass Motorkhana despite having virtually no driving experience. Fourteen-year-old Finn Reed also excelled in a Ford Fairmont, demonstrating superb car control.

Craig Stephens and Melissa Dunstan travelled from Cromwell for the event, sharing a Mazda MX5 roadster.

ClubSport sponsor Evolution Motorsport donated some prizes for the event including a Hard Luck Trophy which went to Darren Murch whose Honda CRX broke an axle on the day.

Outgoing ClubSport co-ordinator, Malcolm Mitchell, said the day attracted a group of very enthusiastic people and he was very happy with the day. It was my last event as ClubSport co-ordinator and it allowed me to go out on a high.

Twenty-four competitors tackled the Standing ¼ and the Motorkhana with fifteen tackling the Autocross.
