Superbike racer Sloan Frost will pilot his Suzuki GSXR1000 Superbike around the Highlands GT circuit as part of a big weekend of motorsport during November’s Highlands 101 endurance event.
Frost will be the first motorcycle rider to enjoy the opportunity to take on the challenging Highlands’ circuit at speed. Although an array of different motorcycles have cruised the track, Highlands’ general manager Mike Sentch says Frost will be the first to be allowed to go all out on racing slicks to set a brand-new lap record on the 4.1km circuit.
“We’re delighted Sloan Frost will be joining us at the Highlands 101 on 14 and 15 November,” says Sentch. “I, for one, can’t wait to hear his Suzuki open up at full song down the start-finish straight as he sets a new benchmark lap time for Superbikes, and motorcycles in general, at Highlands.
Wellington-based Frost, who is preparing to contest the four-round 2016 New Zealand Superbike Championships on his Fujitsu TSS Redbaron Suzuki NZ-backed Suzuki GSXR1000, says: “I’m really excited to be attending the Highlands 101 and being able to showcase a Superbike on the track. I have some close ties with the car racing community and know quite a bit about the event, so I am really stoked to be invited down.”
Frost adds: “As not many motorcycles get onto the Highlands track, it’s a special treat to be able to run some laps. I know how fast the GT3 cars can lap at Highlands and to be able to be on track with one of the McLaren’s, it’s going to be a great experience.
“Although it’s a fun event for me, I want to put on a good show for the spectators and also thank the support given to me by my sponsors Fujitsu NZ, TSS Red Baron and Suzuki New Zealand. And as the New Zealand Superbike Championships has three rounds in the South Island in January next year, it gives me a chance to promote our events to a big crowd of motorsports enthusiasts.”
Frost says he’s really looking forward to the opportunity to post a Superbike lap record. “That’s fantastic and as the track isn’t specifically designed for motorcycles I hope the record will stand for a long time.
“I’m so excited to be part of the event and as soon as I was offered the chance, I think it took me about a minute to say yes! I can’t wait for the November event to come around.”
In addition to Frost having the opportunity to cut some laps on his Superbike, the Highlands’ McLaren supercar will join Frost and his superbike for a few parade laps and a unique photo opportunity in front of the thousands of spectators expected at the Highlands 101 weekend.
The Highlands 101 endurance race and event of the same name takes place over the weekend of 13 to 15 November. The feature race will see up to 42 GT race cars contest the third annual running of the 101 lap enduro with its modern take on the famous Le Mans running start. The event also features the final round of the Australian GT Championship, plus great racing in the Highlands 1+01, a race of one hour plus one lap duration, and the Euromarque class featuring competitors from around the South Island competing in an array of race cars of European origin.
