With six races completed in the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship, Kiwi driver and Red Bull Junior Liam Lawson has only managed to finish in three of them. Although three engine issues have side-lined the teenager in his driver’s title quest, now is not the time to lose faith in his talent and ability. For his limited time racing on track, this has certainly shown through, and that right now is what counts.
Over the weekend in Hungary, a fiery end to the feature race and more mechanical dramas in race two left the Kiwi star parked at the side of the Hungaroring circuit as FIA F3 finished a three week non-stop stint in Europe. In both races he looked certain to bag a good points haul and potential podiums rather he is now languishing back in eighth place in the championship.
While podiums, race wins and championship titles are a measure of a drivers’ ability, so is the way that they go about their business and Lawson has certainly shown that he is in-form right from the start of the F3 season.
Racing at this level is not a cheap business and in a different league to what we are used to in Australasia. Follow the money they say and this season it stops with Dr Helmut Marko and the Red Bull Junior Driver program. What’s important is that those who are paying the bills are satisfied with what is happening on track.
You’re got to think that what they have seen this season, despite the engine hiccups, has been impressive. Lawson’s race-craft has been superb in both the rain and the dry.
Red Bull are playing the long game with Lawson and that is Formula One. While race wins and podiums do matter, also it is how the driver shines on the track and are they destined for greater things.
That boy has talent. Keep the faith!
