With the temperature reaching a balmy 19 degrees at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park in Christchurch, the competition was even hotter during the third round of the 2022 Canterbury Motorsport Interclub Series on Saturday.

Forty-five competitors from five different clubs flew around corners and cones to make the best two-timed runs from three attempts at the three different track configurations on a slickly run day.

The only scary moments were when Gareth Evans slide his Skyline wide to take out cones on the finish line on a late run and when new competitor, Ness Thorpe, spun her Evo 10 on to the grass at the entry to the Carousel corner when the track was being run in reverse direction when doing her first run.

The battle at the front of the field was herculean with Jared Parker (UCM18) (main picture) – 414.25 seconds for the best six runs out of nine, eventually pipping Gareth Evans (Skyline R32) for the win by a miniscule 0.07 seconds.

Third was Deane Buist in his super quick Starlet followed by Malcolm Hoogervorst (Sylvia T) and Neil Gardner (BZR 7).

Terence Phillips (Civic) finished 6th

The Canterbury Car Club ran a great event and even with their 19 competing members, they couldn’t match the might from south of the Rakaia as the Ashburton Car Club’s nine members, led by Gareth Evans, picked up another 67-points. The Autosport Club and Ratec Motorsport also picked up points.

Three rounds down but five to go and so there’s a lot of points still up for grabs. With a recent date change the next event is the Ruapuna Dual Car Sprint on 7 August 2022 with the Autosport Gravel Sprint just three-weeks later.

Neil Gardner (BZR 7) finished in fifth

The winners are decided by the top five place-getters for each club earning points from 20 down to 1. Is this the year of the Ashburton Car Club? It’s certainly looking very likely!

Points after 3 of 8 Rounds:
1/ Canterbury Car Club 202
2/ Ashburton Car Club 192
3/ Ratec Motorsport Club 115
4/ Autosport Club 79
