Evans evens the Interclub Trophy odds at Ruapuna

The weather was chilly, but the competition was hot as 38 drivers from three of the four competing clubs and ranging in age from 13 to very nearly 80, blasted around the Mike Pero Motorsport Park in Christchurch to try and earn a greater share of the Canterbury Interclub points available.

Gareth Evans in his wild 2.5L Turbo Skyline (pictured) was second after the first course but was not holding back the next two runs to win the day by six-seconds and thus give the Ashburton Car Club a better than even chance of winning the Interclub Trophy for the first time in 20 years.

Second and third places were taken by Liam and Rick Matheson in the fast V8 RX7 with Jared Tubb (Integra) in fourth.

There was a short delay during Course 2 when Murray Walls hit the wall exiting the sweeper and he flipped his Lotus. Murray was uninjured as his roll protection did its job brilliantly.

Interclub points earners were:

Canterbury Car Club:   Liam Matheson 2nd – 19, Rick Matheson 3rd – 18, Ross Bristol 5th – 16, Peter Flewellen 6th – 15 and Jeremy Lush 7th – 14.

Ashburton Car Club:     Gareth Evans 1st – 20, Jared Tubb 4th – 17, Greg Cross 9th – 12, Nathan Clark 11th – 11 and Scotty Clark 12th – 10.

Ratec Motorsport:           Justin Smith 8th – 13, Allan Coker 15th – 9, Michael Gregan 34th – 8 and Darryl Smith 38th – 7.

The Canterbury Car Club has nabbed a three-point margin over Ashburton Car Club after the Ruapuna round. With two or three rounds remaining, a Hillclimb in October (which might also be fairly even) and possibly an Autocross on Show Weekend (fairly even also), it is highly likely that the Interclub final on November 20th, the Ashburton run Le Bretons Rd gravel sprint, will give the southerners the advantage and enough points to grab the trophy.

Points after 5 of 8 Rounds:
Canterbury Car Club 320
Ashburton Car Club 317
Ratec Motorsport Club 186
Autosport Club 161
