NTT IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year award for Armstrong

Marcus Armstrong has won the 2023 NTT IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year award. The 23-year-old Kiwi competed in 12/17 IndyCar Series races achieving five top 10 finishes outscoring his rookie counterpart, Augustin Canapino, by 34-points.

“I’m pleased with it,” commented Armstrong. “The team provided me with the best opportunity, and I simply pushed my limits on the track, resulting in this achievement. At the start of the year, my goal was to reach the podium and win races; the Rookie Championship wasn’t my primary focus, but it’s a fantastic bonus.”

Armstrong did not race at the five oval rounds with Takuma Sato sharing the driving duties in the Chip Ganassi Racing car.

The Chip Ganassi Racing Team have announced a full IndyCar season of racing for Armstrong in 2024 including competing on ovals.

He will be joining a four-car driver line-up, alongside new recruit Linus Lundqvist, defending IndyCar champion Alex Palou, and six-time title-winning, fellow Kiwi, Scott Dixon.

“Marcus Armstrong has proven in 2023 his quick adaptation to INDYCAR road and street tracks. He’s ready to be a full-time Chip Ganassi Racing INDYCAR driver,” said Chip Ganassi Racing Managing Director Mike Hull.

“Winning is integrated into his racing resume. This includes his pursuit of the 2023 INDYCAR Rookie of the Year. He knows how to win as a teammate. Next comes ovals at the highest global level. We look forward to a long-term relationship driven by growth and opportunity in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES with Marcus.”

Armstrong made the jump to race in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES with Chip Ganassi Racing after competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship from 2020 to 2022 where he earned four wins and eight podiums.
