Championship battles this good don’t come along every year

“Savour this one boys because championship battles this good don’t come along every year,” said a colleague of mine during the week.  Described as one of, or maybe the best ever Formula One championship fights by the F1 Sky team, the latest F1 Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia certainly delivered.

Yes, if you are a F1 fan, it doesn’t get much better than two of the very best fighting for a title. Remember this season because it may not get any better than this for sometime.

It is so good, that it doesn’t really matter about the other 18 competitors.  Well, they are at least half a lap down the road form Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

Seven-time World F1 champion, Lewis Hamilton is fighting for his eighth title while Max Verstappen desperately wants his first.

Plenty has been written about what has taken place over the 2021 Formula One season, and even more detail about what has taken place over the weekend in Jeddah.

There are all the elements of a great Netflix Series without having to wait for the next Drive to Survive episodes to arrive on our boxes.

In essence, we are seeing some of the best driving that F1 can offer. One of the greatest champion’s up against the best, and maybe equal to, emerging talent who is not prepared to compromise.

1996 F1 champion Damon Hill described his duel over both the 1995 and 96 seasons with multiple World F1 champion Michael Schumacher, that it brings out the best in you which inevitably raises the bar and you become an even beater driver. It is the same this season and what happened in Jeddah is an example of this.

We know Hamilton is very good, but this season we are witnessing something extraordinary in this person’s ability. He has to be if he is to beat such a raw, uncompromising talent of Verstappen. Both have stepped up to another level.

So take a moment and savour what has so far taken place and what may happen at the final and deciding round this weekend in Abu Dhabi. Indeed, championship battles this good don’t come along every year, but they might just in 2022.
