Van Gisbergen’s epic win under protest

Shane van Gisbergen’s thrilling Race 7 win over Brodie Kostecki at the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint is now under review. Contact from van Gisbergen on Kostecki was reviewed by officials following an Erebus Motorsport request, with the team protesting the result, but officials clearing van Gisbergen of any wrongdoing.

However, a Motorsport Australia spokesperson later confirmed: “Motorsport Australia Stewards have received protest paperwork (from Erebus Motorsport) regarding the result of Race 7. A hearing will be held on Sunday morning.”

The race was ‘marred’ by a ding-dong battle between van Gisbergen and Kostecki at the end of the race.

Such was the intensity, that Kostecki was slapped with a bad sportsmanship flag for blocking as he kept van Gisbergen at bay.

It took a robust move at Turn 6 for van Gisbergen to get the job done, with the Kiwi sailing away to career victory No. 78.

“I had a pretty awesome battle with Brodie (Kostecki) at the end of the race,” commented van Gisbergen. “I got out of the car after the race and made sure he enjoyed the battle too.

“The racing was obviously on edge of what’s legal and what’s not – I love that stuff but it’s always a fine line with what’s allowed in our rules. He (Brodie Kostecki) got a bad sportsmanship flag, and I’m not allowed to bump him out of the way, so it’s a fine line, even though I loved it.

“With a one-on-one battle, you should be able to do what you want, but there’s obviously some grey areas. Everyone is fun to race this year which is awesome, and I enjoy the battles.”

Penrite Racing’s David Reynolds completed the podium ahead of a charging Todd Hazelwood, who was an impressed fourth in his CoolDrive Ford.

Cars will return to CARCO.com.au Raceway on Sunday for Qualifying for Race 8 and Race 9 from 9:15am local time/11:15am AEST.
