Kostecki on provisional pole for Sandown 500, van Gisbergen misses out

Supercars championship leader Brodie Kostecki (No. 99 Coca-Cola Chevrolet Cmaroa) has continued his weekend form by taking provisional pole on Saturday afternoon at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500.

Kostecki led the field in Saturday’s group qualifying session and will be the last car out in this afternoon’s Top Ten Shootout that will finalise the grid for tomorrow’s 500-kilometre race.

Margins throughout the field were miniscule in the 20-minute hit out, as all 27 cars entered qualified within a second of Kostecki’s fast lap of 1:08.4550.

While Kostecki was atop the charts, other Supercars stars missed out on the top 10 and are locked into their starting positions for Sunday’s race.

Bathurst 1000 winners Mark Winterbottom (13th) and Chaz Mostert (16th) were key omissions from the top 10, along with reigning Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen, who ended up 19th after running off track on his final flying lap.

Will Brown – Penrite Oil Sandown 500

Kostecki’s Erebus Motorsport teammate Will Brown (No. 9 Coca-Cola Chevrolet Camaro) provisionally qualified second with 20-year old Broc Feeney (No. 88 Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet Camaro) third.

Tickford Racing’s Thomas Randle (No. 55 Castrol Ford Mustang) was fourth in a continuation of his strong form from The Bend, while Adelaide’s Todd Hazelwood (No. 3 CoolDrive Ford Mustang) took an impressive fifth for the Blanchard Racing Team.

Saturday afternoon’s Top Ten Shootout will determine the first five rows of the grid for tomorrow’s Penrite Oil Sandown 500.

Kiwi rookie Matthew Payne (No. 19 Penrite Ford Mustang) will be the first car on track for the ArmorAll Top Ten Shootout, which begins at 5:20 p.m. AEST.

Tomorrow’s race is the first endurance race of 2023, and the longest race yet for the new-for-2023 Gen3 Supercars.
